NEW YORK (April 15, 2003) - The second New York Gaming Summit is attracting key gaming and racing executives, architects, bankers, financial analysts and regulators from across the Northeast and North America
(see attached list). The Summit begins the evening of April 21 at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany. It continues with a full day of seminars April 22.
New York is poised to become one of the gaming industry's hottest markets. Consider this:
• A 2,600-slot casino operated by the Seneca Nation in Niagara Falls has been thriving since opening last New Year's Eve.
• The Oneida Nation's Turning Stone casino resort is in the midst of a $300 million expansion.
• New York State is facing a budget deficit of $11.5 billion, which will only increase the chances that legislators will look to gaming for new revenues.
• That very budget deficit, and competition from nearby states, puts pressure on New York to sort out the roadblocks to placing VLTs at its racetracks. MGM Mirage and Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts have been mentioned as the finalists to run the gaming facility planned for Aqueduct racetrack.
• Neighboring Pennsylvania is considering a proposal that could eventually result in 24,000 slot machines being added to the state's racetracks.
• The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, which operates a popular casino in Akwesasne, is positioned to develop a casino with Park Place Entertainment at the Kutsher's resort in the Catskill region.
More than 30 speakers will provide their perspective on these and other issues relative to the future of gaming in New York, and will facilitate discussions with attendees throughout the conference.
G. Michael Brown, President of the Seneca Niagara Casino, will give the opening night keynote address April 21. Brown will provide a glimpse of his casino's quick road to success in a speech titled, "From Compact to Opening in Four Months." American Gaming Association President and CEO Frank Fahrenkopf, Jr., will present the luncheon keynote address on April 22.
